youth scholarships & opportunities

The American Legion is committed to helping young people pursue higher education and develop into future leaders. Each year, the Legion awards millions of dollars in scholarships to high school students across the nation. Many of these opportunities are open to children and grandchildren of veterans, as well as participants in Legion youth programs such as Boys State, Girls State, and the Oratorical Contest.

In addition to national programs, each local Post may sponsor its own scholarships to support students within the community. Legionnaires are encouraged to make education a priority and to help deserving students reach their goals. The American Legion also publishes “Need a Lift?” — a comprehensive resource guide to scholarships and financial aid available to veterans, their dependents, and youth participants.

American Legion Boys State is one of the nation’s most respected educational programs in civics and government. Established in 1935 by two Illinois Legionnaires, Hayes Kennedy and Harold Card, Boys State was created to counter foreign propaganda camps of the time and promote American democratic values.

Each summer, high school juniors are selected by local American Legion Posts to participate in a hands-on government simulation where they learn about the structure and function of local, county, and state governments. Students elect officials, hold legislative sessions, participate in court proceedings, and take part in assemblies, bands, and recreational activities.

The program’s goal is to teach leadership, responsibility, and citizenship in action. Most expenses are covered by sponsoring American Legion Posts, local businesses, or community organizations. The American Legion Auxiliary also sponsors a similar program for young women called Girls State.

Today, Boys State is conducted in 49 departments across the United States (Hawaii does not currently host a program). While each state runs its own program, all share the same purpose: to develop civic understanding and appreciation for our system of government.

Boys State Scholarship

The Stanley Johnson Nursing / Health Science Scholarship is awarded to students pursuing degrees in nursing, medical, or health science fields.

Stanley Johnson immigrated to the United States from England at age 15. After serving honorably in World War I, he dedicated over 50 years of service to The American Legion, including 52 years as Treasurer of Post 504. His devotion to country, community, and the Legion inspired this scholarship, which was created by Stanley and his wife, Hattie, in honor of his niece, Jean Johnson — a British nurse.

This scholarship continues to encourage young people to follow careers in healthcare and carry forward the spirit of service that defines The American Legion. Local Posts, including Post 328, proudly continue this tradition to support students dedicated to improving the lives of others through medicine and health sciences.
